As a pilot you are probably familiar with moving across many European countries. If you move to work or reside in another EU country, you will also be covered by another social security system. And every social security system is different.

Knowledge about wake turbulence behaviour has increased gradually, thanks to operational measurements, better understanding of physics and wake encounter flight testing. This has contributed to the introduction of new wake separation standards at major European airports, bringing operational benefits while preserving safety.

Pilots are direct witnesses of wake turbulence encounters. To learn more about their experience with this phenomenon, EUROCONTROL and the French Civil Aviation Technical Service (STAC), with the support of ECA, designed a short survey.

An alarming number of pilots are working with no direct link to the airline they actually fly for, with some airlines – especially in the low fares sector – drawing significantly upon a ‘casualised’ workforce, reveals new research by the University of Ghent (Belgium).

The study shows that one out of 6 pilots has no direct employment contract (with 40% of the 20-30 year old pilots flying without being directly employed). Instead, they often work as self-employed, via a company or a temporary work agency. Remarkably, 70% of these self-employed pilots work for low fares airlines.

What happens when you combine:

+ A small/mid-size European airline operating in one country while having an Air Operations Certificate (AOC) in a different country
+ Track record of serious safety incidents and aircraft in poor technical conditions
+ Chronic lack of adequate safety management within this company
+ A civil aviation authority which lacks resources, know-how and experience
+ A second civil aviation authority which acts, but declines to take over the oversight

The short answer is: nothing good !

“For the first time in aviation history, the agreement includes a dedicated article on the social dimension of EU‐US aviation relations. This will not only ensure that the existing legal rights of airline employees are preserved, but that the implementation of the agreement contributes to high labour standards.”
